In a couple of days, i will be reciving an order of chemicals that contains some octanol. With this, i want to prepare octyl ethanoate which is apperntly what they use to create artificial orange flavoring. My assumption is that the procedure for this synthisis is relatively similar to the one in the book about methyl salicilate. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any possible differences in the procedure for making this compound verses making methyl salicylate (besides different chemicals). Normally, i would figure this out on my own but, i only ordered one ounce of octanol so i would like to make as much as i can. Also, if anyone knows the percent yeild of the reaction below that would be fantastic
Ethanoic Acid + Octanol <--> Water + Octyl Ethanoate
CH3OOH + CH3(CH2)7OH <--> H2O + CH3(CH2)7OOCH3
Thanks,
Mevans
